Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts

Mountain Creek Contractors, Inc. has unparalleled experience with box culvert construction throughout North and South Carolina. Over the past 17 years, Mountain Creek has built well over 200 box culverts, consisting of more than 100,000 cy of concrete and 15,000,000 lbs. of reinforcing steel. Mountain Creek has constructed culverts in every region of North and South Carolina and has built culverts for most of the major urban freeways across the two states.

Some of our notable projects are detailed below:

WESTERN WAKE FREEWAY - croppedI-540 Northern Wake Expressway, Wake County, North Carolina (with The Lane Construction Corporation.): This project consisted of 2 miles of the I-540 expressway loop around Raleigh, NC.  Mountain Creek’s portion of the project included roughly 775lf of culvert barrel, 2700 cy of concrete and 335,000lbs of reinforcing steel divided between 2 box culverts.






Triangle & Western Wake Expressways, Raleigh, North culvert 20 - croppedCarolina (with Raleigh Durham Road-builders – a Joint Venture between Granite Construction & Archer Western Contractors and ST Wooten Corporation): Contracted by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority, this project was split into two separate design-build projects, covering a distance of approximately fifteen miles. Mountain Creek was the sole box culvert contractor for both projects, with a total of 22 box culverts. After beginning work on both projects in March 2010, all of the 22 available culverts were completed by June of the following year.




culvertI-85 Reconstruction, Davidson County, North Carolina (with Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. and Austin Bridge & Road): This very complex project involved replacing a 5-barrel culvert under the existing Interstate 85, while maintaining traffic on the heavily traveled thoroughfare.  In four phases of construction, Mountain Creek installed temporary shoring, removed the existing structure, and constructed the new box culvert.




photo - 3Goldsboro Bypass, Goldsboro, North Carolina (with Barnhill Contracting Company): This 12 mile project was let by the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a design build project in December 2011.  Mountain Creek Contractors teamed with Barnhill Contracting Company, and their design firm HDR Engineering, Inc. during the bid, and advised during the design phase of the project.  Construction on the box culverts begin in April 2013 and all 12 box culverts were complete by October of 2014.





Monroe Bypass, MecklenC1900burg and Union Counties, North Carolina (with Monroe Bypass Constructors): Let in coordination with the North Carolina Turnpike Authority and the North Carolina Department of Transportation, this 20 mile design build project will improve the mobility and capacity along the US-74 corridor near Monroe, NC. Mountain Creek Contractors was an exclusive dedicated member of the project team during the bid process, and will be providing structure design, and turnkey box culvert construction for the projects 31 expected box culverts. Construction will begin in the summer of 2015, and 95% of the culverts were complete by the end of 2016.
